After school STEAM Programs

This past fall STS offered a variety of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math) programs again for students in Grades 3-9. A number of Grades 7-9 students signed up for the Level I and II Python coding workshops. This cohort learned the fundamental concepts of coding such as variables, conditional statements, loops, and lists as they completed fun challenges along the way. Using Python 3 language, they became familiar with a variety of different Python functions while honing their computational thinking skills.

Grades 7-9 students also had the option to sign up for the Drone program working with the DJI Tello drone. Students learned to fly the drone using their smartphone or iPad, and were also challenged to create a short marketing video using drone photos and videos showcasing the STS campus and our facilities.

adam p. and kamran s. with droneThe Drone club welcomes students with all levels of experience and provides students the opportunity to develop drone skills such as drone photography and videography, video editing, creating panoramic scenes and of course, drone flying. The drone challenge allowed students to view never-before-seen areas of the STS campus such as our campus roof and different perspectives of their school. 

A number of Elementary STEAM programs were also offered. Fifteen Grades 3 and 4 students signed up for the 5-session after school Scratch Coding program. Working with Coded Minds, Scratch is a block coding website that allows students to create video games, stories, digital art, and much more while collaborating with peers. This workshop introduced block coding to students using the Scratch interface and its functionalities while working on a few mini projects/ 

We also had over 20 Grades 5 and 6 students participate in the Microbit workshop. The microbit is a pocket-sized computer that lets you get creative with digital technology. You can code, customize, and control your microbit from anywhere and can use your microbit for all sorts of unique creations, from robots to musical instruments, and more. In this fun, hands-on program, creativity and technology skills exploded as the students explored the world of engineering, design, and creating.
