Grade 10 MYP Design Class Investigates The Issue Of “Hacking”

STS Grade 10 hacked lamps2Hacking is often thought of as breaking illegally into someone’s computer to gain access to files.  However, the word has evolved recently to mean much more.  Some believe that hacking might be characterized as an appropriate application of ingenuity. For example, life hacks are little ways to make our lives easier. These low-budget tips and trick can help you organize and de-clutter space; prolong and preserve your products; or teach you something (e.g., tie a full Windsor) that you simply did not know before.

The Grade 10 Design class was challenged to use laser cutting and 3-D printing skills to “hack” or redesign a clock or lamp.  In a world where more and more products are being personalized, they used the concepts of ingenuity and adaptation to see how easy, safe and effective it was to “hack” one of these products and make them more desirable for a specific client.
