Outstanding results at the International Independent School Public Speaking Championships (IISPC)

Arbaz Q. ’21, Max C. ’20 and Kirk S.’ 20 participated in the International Independent Schools Public Speaking Competition (IISPSPC) at Buckingham, Browne and Nichols School in Boston, MA last week. This is the largest public speaking competition in the world with 44 schools participating from Canada, the United States, Bermuda, India, Peru, South Africa, South Korea, and the United Kingdom. This year, 180 students participated in the tournament.

STS finished in 2nd place out of the 28 Canadian schools and 3rd place overall out of the 44 participating schools! These rankings are based upon the combined scores of all three boys, placing 2nd in the Canadian schools and 3rd place overall, all three boys achieved high scores. All three boys advanced to at least one categories of the finals.

This tournament is one of two that qualify seven Canadian students to the World’s Individual Public Speaking Championships, and we are pleased to announce that Kirk who placed 6th out of the Canadian students and 7th overall will represent STS and Canada in Shanghai, China in the spring. Congratulations to Kirk who finished 1st in Radio Broadcasting in the round robin and 2nd place in the finals. As well, Kirk finished in 2nd place in Dramatic Interpretation! 

Congratulations to Max Christie who place 8th overall. He also ranked 2nd in the round robin and 3rd place in the Extemporaneous Speaking finals. This category is similar to impromptu speaking; however, the topic is based upon current events or topics that require previous knowledge and understanding. This category is considered the most challenging of the tournament and we are very proud of Max. Max also finished 1st in the Cross Examination Debate round robin. Max and Arbaz finished 3rd in the finals of Cross Examination Debate. 

All three boys, Arbaz, Kirk and Max were wonderful ambassadors for STS and through their outstanding performances, the tradition of Speech and Debate remains strong at STS.
