On Saturday, February 3, Webber Academy hosted the annual Provincial Speech Tournament where Students from Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School once again distinguished themselves. To be eligible for this tournament, students must have placed in the top half of their category at the Regional Speech Tournament held prior to Christmas Holidays. Thirty one students competed and the following are to be congratulated on their success.
Middle School

Solo Acting: Riviera S. ’23 Silver and Jake B. ’21, bronze
Prose: Kailee M. ’22, silver

Senior School
Duet Acting: Griffin E.B. ’20 and Kirk S. ’20, gold
Prose: Stephanie P. ’20, gold
Impromptu Speaking: Emma C. ’18, gold and Brynne S. ’18, silver
Original Oratory: Zaki L. ’20, gold
Only Grade 10 and 11 students who win Gold advance to the National Tournament for next year and we know that Griffin, Kirk, Stephanie and Zaki will represent STS and Alberta admirably.
Last Friday, Ben S. ’11 and Brynne S. ’18 traveled to St. John’s Ravenscourt School in Winnipeg to compete in the Canadian National Championships. Both students represented STS admirably with Brynne finishing fourth in Debate. Earlier this year, at the International Independent Schools Public Speaking Championships, Zaki L. ’20 place won the St. Margaret Trophy for the top speaker under 16 and placed second overall out of 166 students allowing him to compete at the World’s Public Speaking Championship in Cape Town, South Africa the beginning of April. Presently, he is preparing for the four events including, Parliamentary Debate, Impromptu Speaking, Original Oratory and Interpretive Reading.
We are proud of all our students’ participation in Speech and Debate and although it is not possible that every student place at the tournaments, the skills they develop are invaluable and will benefit them throughout their lives. We would like to thank also our parents who have distinguished themselves as judges at the tournament. Without your support, this program could not be possible.
