Throughout Grade 10, students work on a personal project as the capstone for their International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP). Personal projects focus on a passion that revolves around a challenge that is motivating and interesting to the individual student. Each year, students produce unique projects that are completed during a six-month independent research process with the ultimate goal being that students appreciate the process of learning, create a project that meets their learning style, and produce a product or outcome they can take pride in.
In support of this season's winter giving campaign, STS collected goods for Stephen's Backpacks Society. An initiative that began 10 years ago in Calgary, Stephen's Backpack offers hope in a Christmas backpack gift for children in need.
On December 6, Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School hosted Paul Davis, nationally recognized expert on social media and online safety.
This past June, Hassan K. ’25 and his brother Khalil K. ’23 attended the annual general meeting of the RASC (Royal Astronomical Society of Canada). They were presenters at the meeting and were going to present their projects. Khalil had done his project in 2017 and Hassan had done his this year. Both projects were presented at the CYSF (the Calgary Youth Science Fair) and won awards.
Think of every successful person, ever. J.K. Rowling, Shakespeare, Neil Degrasse Tyson, Carl Sagan… all of whom were able to run with their idea. J.K. Rowling led Bloomsbury Publishing and Warner Bros. to create one of the most successful fantasy worlds. Shakespeare led the King’s Men for the most impactful plays in history. Neil Degrasse Tyson led the Hayden Planetarium. Carl Sagan led the show Cosmos, which gave science more media attention. All of these people were leaders. To be able to have an impact and be successful, every child must develop their leadership skills.
The Youth Council is a new committee of the Calgary Foundation that hopes to inform and empower youth. The idea for the Youth Council emerged from the success of the Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School (STS) Primary Years Programme (PYPx). Having just completed its third year, the PYPx has been very successful in teaching youth about vulnerable people in our community and empowering them to advocate on behalf of those groups. The project has had a profound impact not only on the community and the school, but also on the Calgary Foundation itself.
Speech and debate is one of the longest standing traditions at STS, dating back to our founding schools. The program gains momentum every year, and is stronger today than ever before.
