Message from the Head of School

In the complex equation of student learning, the most critical variables are undoubtedly the teacher and the quality of instruction. No others factors have such a profound influence on student achievement and personal development.

The body of knowledge that informs teaching practice is rapidly expanding and now includes the fields of neuroscience, and cognitive, behavioural and environmental psychology, to name just a few. Technology also continues to create new challenges and opportunities for student learning.  As with other professions, it is increasingly challenging for educators to keep abreast of the most current knowledge and to understand its applications and implications within the classroom.

In response to this reality, Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School established the Centre for Excellence in Teaching to avoid significant gaps between research and practice and to ensure that our teachers have the essential opportunities to continuously update their pedagogical and content expertise. This is accomplished by providing robust and transformative adult learning opportunities that include bringing experts into the school, reaching out to the knowledge base, conducting action research, sending teachers to appropriate professional development activities and sustaining a school culture characterized by critical, reflective practice and continuous improvement.

Ultimately, the STS Centre for Excellence in Teaching aims to enrich and optimize the learning and personal development of our students by providing them with talented and inspiring teachers who are empowered to continue their professional growth throughout their careers.

The mission of Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School goes far beyond high academic achievement to include excellence in leadership and character. This can only be accomplished by attracting, developing and retaining teachers who are willing to share their passion and expertise with students outside of the classroom through engagement in our extensive co-curricular program. The Centre for Excellence in Teaching also endeavours to support teachers with diverse opportunities to further develop their skills in these non-academic pursuits in areas such as athletics coaching, outdoor pursuits, fine and performing arts, public speaking and international travel. Through these experiences, teachers also deepen their understanding of the natural relationships between academic and co-curricular learning and strengthen their abilities to make meaningful connections between them.

Ultimately, the STS Centre for Excellence in Teaching aims to enrich and optimize the learning and personal development of our students by providing them with talented and inspiring teachers who are empowered to continue their professional growth throughout their careers. It is also hoped that the existence of these ongoing professional development opportunities and the rich professional culture of the School serve to attract exceptional teachers from around the globe.
