Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School (STS) is a premier co-educational day school nestled in the Foothills of the Rocky Mountains just outside of the City of Calgary on a 220-acre campus. As an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, STS offers all three IB Programmes from Kindergarten through to Grade 12.
In addition to the global perspective offered by the IB Diploma Programme, the School offers an extensive co-curricular program in a technology-rich environment. Students take advantage of the amazing natural setting including a small pond, forest, and extensive trail system to complement their academic learning.

STS is seeking an enthusiastic and engaging science teacher committed to hands-on, student-focused learning to teach senior school courses within the Alberta Program of Studies as well as part of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB-DP) and Middle Years Programme (MYP).
Detailed Job Description
The science program at STS supports hands-on, inquiry-based, technology-facilitated, and creative learning of the Alberta Program of Studies within an IB framework. The successful candidate will be a highly motivated, enthusiastic, and innovative teacher who appreciates working in a collaborative, inquiry-rich environment with a progressive approach to senior school science education. Strong communication skills, experience with effective instructional design and implementation, and an understanding of effective assessment and technology use strategies are essential to success in this position.
The successful candidate must have a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Environmental Science as well as hold an Alberta teaching certificate or be eligible to obtain one.
Though not necessarily prerequisites for this role, knowledge of, and/or training in, the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP) and Diploma Programme (DP) and experience working in an independent school setting are considered assets.
All faculty are expected to contribute to STS’s co-curricular activities and demonstrate commitment to students’ growth outside of the classroom. Teachers new to STS participate in a dynamic and supportive mentorship program that includes ongoing professional development both in IB and non-IB programs.

- Teach to the Alberta Program of Studies
- Demonstrate the competencies outlined in Alberta Education’s Teaching Quality Standard (TQS) and STS’s Model for Teaching Excellence
- Abide by policies laid out in the Education Act (2019)
- Ensure the safety and well-being of our students in accordance with STS procedures and policies
- Understand and implement the Mission and Vision of the School
- Collaborate with school administration, the Middle Years Programme (MYP) and Diploma Programme (DP) Coordinator, other teachers in the department, and other faculty at STS
- Model the Learner Profile of the International Baccalaureate (IB)
- Create a supportive learning environment for students that encourages inquiry and offers opportunities to develop the attributes of the IB Learner Profile
- Develop and implement a rich and varied curriculum in Science including the use of manipulables, computer-aided graphing and inquiry to engage students in scientific thinking and learning
- Utilize a variety of effective teaching, classroom management and assessment practices in support of student achievement
- Conduct formative and summative assessment of students, provide detailed, effective, and immediate feedback to support student learning as well as evaluate achievement and report results to students and parents
- Use data-informed strategies to understand students’ learning abilities and apply teaching interventions to support learning
- Maintain effective communication with parents, colleagues, and students
- Utilize technology to promote innovative and effective teaching and learning
- Provide pastoral care to students in the capacity of an advisor to support student achievement and well-being
- Engage with and support co-curricular and athletic programs to support student learning and development outside the classroom.
Experience, Skills, Technical and Behavioral Competencies
- Experience working with Grade 7-12 students in a school environment
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Ability to work well with learning management systems, Google Apps for Education, Microsoft Office and educational software in science (e.g., Pasco probes)
- Ability to implement inclusive educational frameworks like Universal Design for Learning (UDL), cooperative learning to support student discourse
Experience with diagnostic and formative feedback to support learning and designing assessments and evaluations to support student learning and metacognition
- Demonstrate a commitment to continuous learning and reflection to refine teaching practice;
- Engage in ongoing professional learning;
- Keep current on educational research about how students learn and factors that influence students’ learning and achievement;
- Ensure that skill development and technology use by students keeps pace with changing needs at the post-secondary level to ensure that students are well prepared for the next stage of their learning.
