Spartan Athletics

A Lifelong Love of Sport

Rooted in Sport
Built to Compete.

Sport has been central to STS since our founding schools first took the field. It shapes how we think about student life, what we expect of ourselves, and what it means to be a Spartan—nil nisi optimum—nothing but our best.

More Than a Team

A Way of Life

Spartan athletics has developed students for generations. With strong coaching, exceptional facilities, and a community that shows up for one another, our programs challenge students to compete, grow, and carry that drive into everything they do.

Train. Compete. Lead.

Spartan athletes have access to a full weight-and-conditioning gym, an indoor running track, and a dedicated trainer on staff. Our sports medicine program is one of the few in Alberta offered as an accredited course for academic credit, giving students meaningful, real-world experience alongside their sport.

We field competitive teams in more than 10 sports. At the Senior High level, STS competes as a 3A school within the Calgary Independent Schools Athletic Association (CISAA) and qualifies for provincial championships through the ASAA South Central Zone. Our teams consistently compete at the provincial level in basketball, volleyball, soccer, rugby, golf, cross-country, and more.

Our Athletic Park has expanded opportunities for track and field, soccer, rugby, and field hockey, adding to a campus designed for training, competition, and growth.

Co-Curricular Athletics

Opportunities from Grades 4-12 allow students to participate in both individual and team sports, at various levels of play. These programs are optional and take place during lunch hours and/or after school.

Elementary School

Middle School & Senior School

Confidence comes from competence.

Competence comes from commitment.

That is how champions are built.

There Is More Than One Way to Be Part of a Team

Not every Spartan competes on the court, field, green, or ice, but every Spartan has a role to play. Our athletics community includes sports medicine students, coaches, team managers, referees, photographers, videographers, and sports journalists, because every competitive team runs on the community behind it.

It Starts Earlier Than You Think

A student’s athletic life at STS begins well before Middle School. Elementary co-curricular programs give younger students an early experience of team life, the structure, the camaraderie, and what it feels like to be part of something bigger than themselves.

A Taste of What's Possible

These programs go beyond learning the basics of a sport. They build confidence, foster belonging, and help students understand what it means to be part of a team, so that when they reach Middle and Senior School, stepping onto a competitive roster feels like a natural next step.

Spartan From Day One

More than three-quarters of our Middle School students participate in at least one team sport. That level of engagement reflects years of intentional programming, strong coaching, and a school culture where athletics has always been part of a well-rounded education.

Spartan Stories

Go deeper into what makes our Athletics program unique.

We Are Spartans

Why does the Spartan name continue to evoke such powerful emotions two and a half millennia later? The legacy of these legendary warriors has traveled far beyond the battles in which they fought, and their reputation for discipline and total devotion to excellence on and off the field continues to inspire students, and especially athletes, the world over. Sparta’s fame was not built on having the largest army in ancient Greece, but rather the best trained. Formal education began at the age of seven and continued through adulthood as each member was elevated to their fullest potential. Even now, those elite individuals in any industry or walk of life are often referred to as "Spartans".

Provincial Badminton Champions

The Spartans took a strong team to the ASAA Badminton Provincials on May 6-7, 2022 in Medicine Hat, A.B. We had three boys singles and one girls doubles team competing after qualifying from the South Central Zones on April 30, 2022.

Students are Cranking, Crimping, and Throwing on STS’s New Climbing Boulder

The new STS climbing boulder and climbing wall mats are getting a workout as are the students and faculty who are using them. Mr. Straub has continued his creative route setting, building an expanding range of climbing and bouldering routes that engage climbers regardless of age or ability, now on an increased number of surfaces.
