Ways to Give

Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School and the Strathcona-Tweedsmuir Foundation are registered charities with the Canada Revenue Agency. All eligible donations directed to the School or the Foundation will receive a tax receipt.

Your philanthropic investment in Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School (STS) can be made in a variety of ways. If you have other ideas or questions, please don't hesitate to call us to discuss. Thank you for your consideration of the future of STS.

Annual Giving

Annual giving is where many families begin their philanthropic involvement. Annual giving is requested from each family, providing vital support for school priorities, program enrichment and school development. Our community welcomes your participation in this time-honoured tradition.

Capital initiatives

Generations of alumni and families have shared the heritage of our treasured institution. Throughout our history, leaders in the STS community have looked to the future by donating land, supporting capital projects, and renewing or refurbishing facilities to meet the changing needs of students and faculty. Today's students are the beneficiaries of significant building programs, and we will continue to build this support for the STS students of the future.

Endowment Giving

Great contributors to society come from every socio-economic background. The STS tradition of positive contribution to community, society and the world is extended to students who will enrich our school now, and the world, later. If a remarkable student is unable to attend STS because of the cost of tuition, we provide needs-based financial assistance. Be a catalyst of change when you support our bursary program.

If you are interested in giving to a specific endowment fund, please contact Brenda Thompson at 403-938-8318 or Brenda.Thompson@sts.ab.ca.

Legacy Giving — The Atkinson Society

Celebrate where STS is today and chart our future with legacy giving. One of our early legacy gifts was from W. H. Atkinson who, in 1968, bequeathed $250,000. The largest charitable gift of its time, his legacy was instrumental in establishing our expansive natural campus.

The Legacy giving program allows members of our community (alumni, parents, alumni parents, and employees) to support the school by leaving a bequest as part of their estate planning.  It provides the opportunity for the School to be both proactive and forward-thinking with a view to secure long-term financial sustainability for our school and community.

Bequests

A bequest (transfer of cash, securities or other property through a will or a living trust) to STS is a flexible, tax-effective way to leave a legacy of learning. By naming Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School to receive a gift in your will, your estate will generate tax credits that may offset payable taxes.

Gifts of Registered Assets

Registered Retirement Plans (RRSPs, RRIFs) and company-sponsored pensions plans may be their single biggest assets beyond your home. Withdrawals from these funds will be taxed. If you name Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School as a beneficiary of your funds, your estate will receive a tax receipt for the amount of the gift.

Real Estate

A gift of real estate is a substantial commitment to STS and realizes tax benefits. Your residence, vacation home, farm, acreage, or vacant lot may have appreciated through the years so that its sale would mean a sizable capital gains tax. By making a gift of this property, you avoid or significantly reduce the amount of income, capital gains, and estate taxes you would have to pay. At the same time, you receive a charitable deduction for the full fair market value of the property.

Stocks and Securities

We can receive your donated securities from Canada. At the close of the day, the stock will be sold, and you'll gain tax benefits for the stock value at the time of sale. To transfer securities to the STS Foundation, please complete the Deed of Gift of Securities form or contact us at 403-938-8318 for non-Canadian gifts.

United Way

The United Way campaign is about supporting local families to make Calgary a great place for everyone to live. You have the choice to direct your donation to one of United Way's investment areas or to a registered charity of your choice like Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School. You simply need to provide Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School's charitable registration number. The School receives a statement and the funds from the United Way.

Corporate Matching

Employers often offer a corporate matching gift program. If you make a gift to STS and your company has a matching gift program, all you need to do is notify your employer that you have made a gift. They'll send an additional donation to STS. There are over 200 companies in Calgary that offer matching gift programs. Check with yours to see if this option is available.
