Student Leadership

"Bringing about change, gaining momentum, and creating a movement is not a straight line. There's going to be ups and downs, there's going to be steps forward and steps back so I think it's a lot of persistence and dedication to working hard and working together." - Shaun O'Brien '90, Social Justice Lawyer in Toronto

Leadership isn’t simply a position. At STS, we develop leadership capacity in the entire school community rather than only for individual leaders.

We create leadership by nurturing qualities like fairness, integrity, respect, compassion, and empathy. It happens in the everyday school experience through curriculum, our flagship programs, and co-curricular activities. Our teachers purposefully model and teach these qualities.

"[At STS, I developed] a strong sense of self. This helped me immensely when I entered a work environment where a woman's place was not the norm." - Justice Rosemary Nation '71, Justice of the Alberta Court of Queen's Bench

A core driver of STS learning to take responsibility. In the STS community, as in life, leaders emerge and recede as needed at all levels. Leadership, for us, is a series of behaviours rather than a role for heroes.
