...While attending STS I learned to engage with ideas, to consider different points of view, and to shoulder the responsibility we all have to make the world a better place. I am deeply grateful for all the School has done for me. - Harvey Locke '75, Conservationist, writer and photographer, Co-founder of the Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative
The Strathcona-Tweedsmuir education encourages citizenship and global-mindedness. We commit to pushing students beyond academic excellence, from personal development to responsibility at the global and local levels.
Round Square is a network of more than 180 schools in 50 countries that shares the same commitment. Our philosophy is summed up in the acronym IDEALS. It stands for Internationalism, Democracy, Environment, Adventure, Leadership and Service.
Like other Round Square Schools, we do community service work, volunteer building projects, exchange programs and leadership conferences locally and around the world.

STS Citizenship Opportunities
You’ll see STS students at the Calgary Drop-In Centre serving food, following the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Program, promoting environmentalism or assisting in a community service project as far away as Peru.
That’s because we integrate the Round Square IDEALS at every grade level. Even Elementary students learn about globalism and a commitment to service in our Humanitarian Outreach Program and the Terry Fox Run.
Teachers weave internationalism and democracy into our social and political studies, and language arts classes. For example, our Grade 11 Agencies Program promotes active citizenship and international mindedness. Senior High students participate in two international Model United Nations conferences.
Our Outdoor Education develops leadership skills through adventure. The environment has become a key focus throughout Middle and Senior School.
Service is a cornerstone of everything we do at Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School.
