One Act Play Festival
By: Katrina Tashlikowich, STS Faculty
From April 28 through 30, STS hosted the Zone 5 High School One Act Play Festival, providing an invaluable opportunity to connect with the larger high school fine arts community. In addition to hosting, STS also produced two plays for the competition, Bluebirds by Vern Thiessen and Mirror Game by Dennis Foon.
The Zone 5 Festival is a non-competitive celebration of drama. It provides an occasion for the coming together of all high school drama students in a festival situation. Students come from all areas of outside of Calgary proper. In addition to STS the schools that participated this year were W.H. Croxford High School, Bow Valley High School, Strathmore High School, and Cochrane High School.
The Festival promotes a learning environment by selecting two adjudicators from the Alberta theatre community. The adjudicators publicly comment on the performances and give a more detailed, private discussion with the production individuals. Each year one or two productions are selected to represent Zone 5 at the Provincial One-Act Festival, this year Bluebirds, produced by STS Grade 12 student Clayton B. '22, was selected.
The Provincial One Act Theatre Festival took place in Red Deer from May 12-14 and Bluebirds was further selected for Outstanding Stage Design and also received an honourable mention for Light Design. The group consisted of Alia N. '22, Catriona T. '22, Ellie M. '23, as the actors in the piece; Lauren B.'22 ran lights and Clayton B. '22 directed the piece and was the sound designer and engineer.
