Elementary School Arts
The STS Elementary School music program strives to develop enthusiastic music learners who enjoy participating in a variety of music activities. As an experiential program, Elementary music offers students the opportunity to create, explore, perform and present music through a variety of media.
Students will acquire and demonstrate skills in music literacy and performance, use a musical framework to compose and create in multiple contexts, develop music appreciation through active listening and interpret music with knowledge and understanding. Music concepts and skills are also taught through exposure to music reflective of many cultures, styles, and periods of origin.
The STS Elementary music program offers a variety of formal and informal performance opportunities, both curricular and co-curricular, including choir, handbell choir and musical productions. Music learning through the Primary Years Programme (PYP) includes the demonstration and reinforcement of the learner profile, learning through inquiry and transdisciplinary collaboration.
Art education is concerned with the organization of visual material. Acquiring proficiency in art requires systematic instruction in how we see, interpret and make sense of visual stimuli. It requires an understanding in how others interpret the visual messages we produce and an education in the use of traditional and contemporary tools, materials and media.
The STS Elementary School art program is concerned with having students think and behave as artists. Students learn ways in which people express their ideas and feelings in visual forms. The Elementary program offers an intentional series of lessons that allow students to explore a variety of materials, techniques and genres in a manner that will prepare them for future projects in the grades to follow. Throughout the Elementary art program students will be introduced to drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, and woodworking projects.
Fine Arts Co-Curricular Programs
STS offers a variety of co-curricular activities to engage students and foster character development and leadership potential. These programs are optional and take place during lunch hours and/or after school.
Primary Choir (Grades 1 and 2)
Primary Choir is open to all interested singers in Grades 1 and 2. The choir rehearses at lunch recess on Mondays and singers are asked to make a commitment to attend all rehearsals. Primary Choir is the first building block of our STS choral program and singers will develop new skills and have many performance opportunities. Look forward to hearing the Primary Choir at our winter and spring choral concerts.
Elementary Choir (Grades 3 and 4)
The Elementary Choir is the first opportunity for young singers in Grades 3 and 4 to participate in a full hour rehearsal on Wednesdays after school. This ensemble explores two part singing and consistently uses octavos and choral scores to develop music reading skills. The choir performs at two annual school concerts along with other internal and external performance opportunities.
Intermediate Choir (Grade 5 and 6)
Building on the Elementary Choir experience, the STS Intermediate Choir rehearses on Tuesdays after-school and is open to all interested singers. This choir attempts more complex choral repertoire and offers further opportunities for the development of singing skills. The choir performs at two annual school concerts along with other internal and external performance opportunities.
Handbell Choir (Grade 5)
Handbell choir is open to Grade 5 students. The handbell choir can accommodate fifteen ringers in each session. Students who are not chosen to participate in the first session will have a chance to join the group in January. Handbell choir begins in September and rehearses every Wednesday at lunch recess. The handbell choir performs at our school choral concerts in December and the spring.
Elementary Musical Production (Grades 1-6)
The Elementary musical is a long standing STS tradition, delighting all members of the school community. All students in Grades 1 through 6 participate in the presentation of a fully staged musical production with cameo roles by Elementary School faculty and the Head of School. With rehearsals in both music class and during recess blocks, all Grade 5 and 6 students are given the opportunity to have a speaking role complete with props and costumes. The Elementary musical happens biennially in the winter term of odd numbered years and is produced by the Elementary music specialists.
