STS Rugby Season Final Report
A final report for the 2017 STS Rugby season! As a result of the ASAA seeding formula, STS qualified as a “wild card” in the Rugby Tier III provincial competition in High River on June 9 - 10. STS was ranked #5 of seven teams.
On the morning of Friday, June 9, the Spartans defeated Oilfields HS 64 – 0 in Round 1 of the competition. Ryan V. '17 scored most of the points and was ‘Man of the Match’.
On Friday afternoon STS faced the number one seeded team (and eventual provincial champs) West Island College (WIC). STS went ahead 8 – 0 early in the game, but then WIC scored two quick tries and was ahead at half-time. The game went back-and-forth in the second half, and STS ended up losing 34 – 23. Zak K. '17's excellent game management at scrum-half led to him being named ‘Man of the Match’. This left STS to battle our long-time rival, Banff Community HS, for the provincial bronze medal on Saturday, June 10.
On Saturday morning a focused and committed Spartan team defeated Banff 43 – 12 to capture the provincial bronze. Zak K. and Henry M. '18 scored tries and Harrison G. '17 scored two. Ryan V. scored the rest (he was the team MVP for a reason!). After the game Ryan intervened as team captain and named the coaches, Mr. Chris Ruskay, Mr. Marc Boulianne, Mr. Matt Kerr and Mr. Mike O’Brien, as “Men of the Match”!
